Chapter 011820

Shannon’s territory was once part of Sainte-Catherine, where Irish immigrants began settling in 1820 at the invitation of seigneur Michel-Louis Juchereau Duchesnay. The town’s name recalls these Irish roots. For a long time, logging for the Québec City shipyards was the main livelihood.

Chapter 021912

In 1912, the Department of Militia acquired land in Sainte-Catherine de Portneuf and Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier to create the Valcartier military camp. Farmers, mostly of Irish descent, had to leave land their ancestors had cleared.

Chapter 031946 – 1964

On December 14, 1946, part of Sainte-Catherine de Portneuf split off to form the municipality of Shannon. Residents of the area objected to municipal taxes and a lack of services. In 1964, a second federal expropriation enlarged the military base, and Shannon lost concessions 7 to 12.

Chapter 042017 – 2021

On May 20, 2017, the municipality of Shannon became a city. In the 2021 census it had 6,432 residents, in an area next to Canadian Forces Base Valcartier.
