A first municipality, Saint-Dunstan, was created in 1845 and dissolved in 1847. The parish of Saint-Dunstan-du-Lac-Beauport was established in 1853, followed by a parish municipality of the same name in 1855.
In the early 20th century, about forty families lived from subsistence farming. In the 1930s, alpine skiing changed things: a first chairlift was installed in 1938 at Mont Saint-Castin. The village became a leisure spot for Québec City residents, and the population grew quickly from the 1970s.
Residents and visitors had long called the municipality by the lake’s name. In 1989, it was officially renamed Lac-Beauport. In 1991, it signed a friendship pact with Sévrier and Le Grand-Bornand, two communes in Haute-Savoie, France.
