On October 29, 1672, Intendant Jean Talon granted the land to Claude-Sébastien de Villieu, a lieutenant in the Carignan Regiment. The 1681 census lists five early settlers. In 1700, the Villieu family sold the seigneury to Pierre-Noël Le Gardeur, sieur de Tilly, and it took the name Tilly from then on.
