In 1830, Marguerite Marcoux, widow of Lazare Buteau, a former militia major from Saint-Gervais, gave land to the parish council. The deed stated that the parish would bear the name Sainte-Marguerite. Bishop Bernard-Claude Panet canonically erected it on November 8, 1831, under the patronage of Saint Margaret of Scotland.
The parish was civilly erected in 1837. A first municipality, Sainte-Marguerite-de-Joliette, was created in 1845 and abolished in 1847. The current parish municipality dates from July 1, 1855. The name Joliette referred to Louis Jolliet, who had been granted the neighbouring seigneury in 1697.
The current church was built from 1861 to 1864. The municipality belonged to Dorchester County until 1982, when it joined the Nouvelle-Beauce RCM. In 2014, it took part in the TV show La Petite Séduction.
