The territory was part of the Sainte-Marie and Jolliet seigneuries, owned by the Taschereau family. The first settlers, from Sainte-Marie, Saint-Henri, Saint-Gervais and Sainte-Claire, settled along Route Sainte-Thérèse, which the Taschereaus had laid out to open the back country.

Around 1850, about a thousand people lived there and asked for their own parish. Archbishop Pierre-Flavien Turgeon canonically erected it on March 20, 1852, from parts of Sainte-Marguerite, Sainte-Claire and Sainte-Marie. The name honours Catherine-Hénédine Dionne, widow of seigneur Pierre-Elzéar Taschereau, who helped fund the church. The parish municipality was created in 1855.
The Lévis and Kennebec railway crossed the parish in the 1870s, and the station stayed open until around 1965. In 1893, Joseph Mercier built a first water system with wooden pipes, which served the village until 1967.
On October 1, 1910, lightning set fire to the first church while the new one was already under construction. The current Romanesque church was blessed in 1912. Electricity reached the village in 1925, and a bus line linked the parish to Lévis and Québec City along Route 275 from 1933.
