The township of Frampton was proclaimed on July 10, 1806. The same day, the Crown granted 59 lots, or 11,029 acres, to Pierre-Édouard Desbarats and his associates. A translator for the Quebec Gazette and the House of Assembly of Lower Canada, Desbarats went on to sell lots to Irish settlers.

In 1811, the chief road commissioner decided to open a road between Sainte-Marie and the township. The next year, Desbarats and George Pyke hired Robert Gibson to build a sawmill. The first permanent residents settled between 1810 and 1815, and the 1825 census, the first on the territory, counted 194 people.
In 1825, Bishop Plessis visited Frampton and accepted land offered by Desbarats for a chapel. An Irish Anglican community also settled in the north of the township, where Christ Church of Springbrook and its cemetery are now a cited heritage site. The Catholic mission of Saint-Édouard was canonically erected in 1858, and Saint-Édouard church was built from 1859 to 1863.
The township municipality was created in 1845, abolished in 1847 and restored in 1855. In 1892, it gave way to the parish municipality of Saint-Édouard-de-Frampton. In the late 19th century, French Canadians gradually replaced the Irish, who left for industrial centres. In 1997, the municipality adopted the short name Frampton, already in common use.
