After the War of 1812, English soldiers received land in the eastern part of Frampton Township, then called East Frampton. They sold it to Gilbert Henderson (1785-1876), who granted it to Irish immigrants. The area had a few residents by 1823.

The history of Saint-Malachie

- 1874Municipality established
- 1897Church completed
- 1948Name Saint-Malachie adopted
The Saint-Malachie-de-Frampton mission opened in 1841, and a chapel was built in 1845. Since most of the pioneers came from Armagh, Ireland, the mission took as its patron Saint Malachy, archbishop of that city in the 12th century. The Anglicans also had their church, Saint-Paul, built on land donated by William Henderson.
From 1871 on, French-Canadian families settled in place of the Irish and became the majority. The parish was canonically erected in 1873, and the municipality was created in 1874. A toad invasion in 1873 is said to have earned the area the nickname La Crapaudière.
The current church was built in 1896-1897 by Elzéar Métivier and his sons, to plans by architect David Ouellet. A statue of Saint Malachy attributed to Louis Jobin has adorned its façade since 1897. The municipality’s name was shortened to Saint-Malachie in 1948, and the church was designated a heritage building in 2024.
