The village grew around the small Saint-Michel-Station train stop when the railway reached northern Bellechasse. Although it carries the name of an old seigneury, La Durantaye is one of the youngest municipalities in the region.
The parish and municipality of Saint-Gabriel-Archange were created on August 4, 1910. The first mass was held in the CN station on June 1, 1910, and a wooden church was built the same year. The post office opened in 1911 under the name La Durantaye.
In 1913, the parish took the name La Durantaye. The church, designated a heritage building in 2008, has been turned into a multipurpose centre. From July 15 to 18, 2010, the village celebrated its 100th anniversary.
