Father Joseph-Onésime Brousseau founded the parish in 1882 and, that fall, built a small sacristy that also served as his home. The church was built in 1883-1884 by Elzéar Métivier. During construction, a fire broke out in the steeple, and the priest promised Saint Anne a pilgrimage site if the church was spared.
In 1892, Father Brousseau and Virginie Fournier founded the Sisters of Notre-Dame du Perpétuel Secours. In 1905, a fire destroyed most of their buildings, and the motherhouse was rebuilt from 1906 to 1910. The Chapelle Sainte-Anne-des-Montagnes, destroyed in the same fire, was rebuilt and became a pilgrimage site.
In 1939, Joseph-Émile Métivier launched the business that would become Les Industries Provinciales Ltée (IPL), a major name in plastics. The sisters opened a teachers’ college in the early 1940s and left for the Dominican Republic in 1948, the start of their work abroad. The Parc des Bâtisseurs was laid out starting in 2014.
