Residents asked for a parish as early as 1836, and it was first canonically established on February 28, 1843. Saint-Basile’s parish registers opened on January 14, 1847, the year considered its founding. The name honours Saint Basil the Great, bishop of Caesarea in the 4th century.
In 1948, part of the territory became the village municipality of Saint-Basile-Sud. The village grew around a railway junction and a cement plant. Started in the late 1940s by Gustave Papillon and his father, Ernest-J. Papillon, the Ciment Québec plant built its first rotary kiln in 1951.
The Centre Nature was founded in 1976 by local cross-country skiing fans. In 2000, the parish municipality of Saint-Basile and the village of Saint-Basile-Sud merged to form the town of Saint-Basile. In 2005, the community centre was named after Ernest-J. Papillon.
