In 1653, Jean de Lauson granted the seigneury to Jean Bourdon for his son Jean-François Bourdon de Dombourg, hence its first name, Dombourg. The first settlers arrived from 1667, and a seigneurial mill was built in 1668.

In 1680, Nicolas Dupont de Neuville bought the seigneury and gave it his name. It had 372 residents by 1683. The Saint-François-de-Sales parish was established in 1684, with Jean Basset as its first priest, and the place was also called Pointe-aux-Trembles, after a point once covered with aspens.
From 1802 to 1830, the Bourg Saint-Louis, the heart of today’s village, saw a building boom. Between 1840 and 1870, Neuville’s shipyards built 65 three-masted ships, sold mainly in England. The painter Antoine Plamondon settled in Neuville in 1851, and several of his paintings hang in the parish church.
In 1919, the village of Neuville split from the parish of Pointe-aux-Trembles and became a separate municipality. The two municipalities merged in 1997 to form the town of Neuville. Since 1984, Neuville has been twinned with Neuville-de-Poitou, in France.
