Armagh Township was created in 1799 and named after a county in Ulster, Northern Ireland. Despite the name, the first residents were not Irish. Charles Turgeon, from Saint-Vallier, settled there around 1838, and other settlers came from Saint-Vallier, Saint-Michel and Saint-Raphaël.

The history of Armagh

- 1857First chapel built
- 1882Parish canonically established
- 1934Church completed
- 1993Village and parish merge
In 1857, residents got permission to build a wooden chapel, and a first missionary opened the parish registers. A first church followed, and the parish of Saint-Cajetan-d’Armagh was canonically erected in 1882. Its patron, Saint Cajetan, or Gaetano of Thiene, founded the Theatine order in the 16th century.
Cheese making was long one of the main activities. On the Rivière Armagh, the Compagnie électrique d’Armagh built a dam in 1919, and its power plant ran until 1942. The current church, an imposing cut-stone building, was built in 1933-1934.
In 1950, the village of Armagh split from the parish to form its own municipality. The two merged on December 29, 1993, to create the municipality of Armagh. The old Langlois station, from 1916, was moved to the Parc des Chutes in 2014 and became the Musée de la Gare in 2016.
