Sillery is named after Noël Brûlart de Sillery, a Knight of Malta whose gift of 40,000 livres allowed the Jesuits to found a mission in 1637 in the anse Saint-Joseph cove, on the site of today’s Maison des Jésuites de Sillery. In 1640, the Augustinian nuns founded Canada’s first hospital in the neighbouring cove. In 1651, the Sillery lands were made a fief and seigneury, a league and a half deep.

In 1732, coadjutor bishop Pierre-Herman Dosquet built the first villa there, called Samos. In the 19th century, the anse au Foulon became a hub for the timber trade and shipbuilding. From 1850, Edward Stavely built the Domaine Cataraqui for merchant Henry Burstall. By 1860, four small workers’ hamlets stood alongside the large estates of timber entrepreneurs, many of which later passed to religious communities.
On February 8, 1856, the area became the civil parish of Saint-Colomb-de-Sillery, separated from Sainte-Foy and Québec. Chemin Cap-Rouge, which served the large estates, was renamed chemin Saint-Louis in 1929. In the 1930s, architect Robert Blatter built the first International Style homes in Québec there, including the Kerhulu house. On May 10, 1947, the municipality became the City of Sillery.
In the early 1960s, some estates were subdivided for houses, and the construction of boulevard Champlain destroyed several homes in the old workers’ hamlets. The Sillery historic district was created in 1964. The city became the Town of Sillery on May 31, 1980, then was merged into Québec City on January 1, 2002.
