The area was first tied to Lorette, where Jesuit Pierre Chaumonot built a chapel in 1674 for the Huron-Wendat who had taken refuge near Québec City. After they left for Jeune-Lorette in 1697, the place became known as Ancienne-Lorette and was settled by French colonists. The Champigny area was known as Gaudarville, and the Chauveau area as Les Grands-Déserts.

In 1855, the area became the parish municipality of Ancienne-Lorette. It lost part of its land in 1872 when Saint-Félix-du-Cap-Rouge was created, and again in 1909 with Saint-Gérard-Majella. In 1947, the village split from the parish to form the village municipality of Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, and the parish remained mostly agricultural.
In 1939, an airfield was created here to train air observers during the Second World War. The first commercial flight took place on September 11, 1941, and the airport became a civilian facility in 1945. Construction of the first modern terminal began in 1955, and the first transatlantic flights arrived in 1976.
On March 15, 1969, the parish took the name L’Ancienne-Lorette, then it was annexed to Sainte-Foy on December 26, 1970, and became the Laurentien ward. In 1993, the airport was renamed in honour of Jean Lesage. After the 2002 merger, the Laurentien ward became the Aéroport neighbourhood, part of the Sainte-Foy–Sillery–Cap-Rouge borough since November 1, 2009.
