In the 19th century, Montmorency Falls powered several businesses, including the Patterson sawmill, a Dominion Textile mill and a hydroelectric plant. In the early 20th century, the Montmorency-Charlevoix railway linked the Sault-Montmorency industries to Québec City.
By the early 1920s, the Sault had about 550 residents, a third of the population of L’Ange-Gardien, which it was part of. On April 3, 1920, it became the municipality of Saint-Jean-de-Boischatel, named after Jean-François de Beauchatel, General Montcalm’s first aide-de-camp.
In 1925, the creation of the Sainte-Marguerite-Marie parish cut the last ties with L’Ange-Gardien. On November 23, 1991, the municipality took the name Boischatel.
