The area was first part of the seigneury of Lauzon. Before the parish was created, Saint-Jean-Chrysostome was called Taniata, an Abenaki word thought to mean “where the poplars grow.” The parish was established in 1828, the fourth to split from Saint-Joseph-de-la-Pointe-de-Lévy.

In the 19th century, the timber trade drove the local economy. Saint-Romuald split from Saint-Jean-Chrysostome in 1855, and its Chaudière-Bassin area became known for timber and shipbuilding. In 1859, Hans Denaston Breakey built a sawmill just upstream from the Chaudière falls, on a site then called Chaudière Mills.
The first train on the Quebec & Richmond Railway line through Charny ran on November 13, 1854. The spot, known as Chaudiere Junction, became a major rail hub, and the parish of Charny was founded in 1903. Breakeyville followed in 1909, around the Breakey family mill. The Québec Bridge, which starts in Saint-Romuald, was inaugurated in 1919.
In 1965, Saint-Romuald merged with Saint-Télesphore, and both Charny and Saint-Jean-Chrysostome became cities. The Centre hospitalier Paul-Gilbert opened in Charny in 1987. On January 1, 2002, the four municipalities merged into Lévis, and the former Saint-Romuald city hall became the city hall of the new Lévis.
